Diabetes Mellitus VS Diabetes Insipidus

Different kinds of diabetes have different symptoms that require their own individual treatments. Diabetes Mellitus is simply common diabetes. When the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin for the body to regulate sugar or glucose in the bloodstream you have diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes Insipidus is very different and a lot less common. Often first identified by excessive thirst and urination, diabetes insipidus has nothing to do with Diabetes Mellitus, it is a hormonal imbalance of salt and water in the body.

Here are some things you can look for if you think you might have Diabetes Insipidus.

  • Extreme thirst
  • Producing large amounts of diluted urine
  • Frequent need to get up to urinate during the night
  • Preference for cold drinks
  • Dehydration
  • Fatigue

The above list is taken from the Mayo clinic’s overview of Diabetes insipidus.

If you have these symptoms see a doctor. The treatment for Diabetes Insipidus usually includes hormone therapy, low salt diet, or drinking more water.

It is important to know that no matter what kind of diabetes you are diagnosed with there is hope! There are communities of people all over the world thriving in spite of diabetes.
