Tips for Managing Diabetes Through Your Diet
What you eat plays a big role in controlling diabetes or stopping it before it starts. The types of food, when you eat, and how much can all affect your blood sugar. Here’s what to focus on:
- Carbs Matter -Carbs come in simple and complex forms. Simple carbs like sugar, sweets, white bread, and white potatoes can spike your blood sugar. Complex carbs like vegetables break down slowly and are better for you.
- Eat More VeggiesAim for all the colors of the rainbow! Getting 6-8 servings of veggies and 2 fruits every day helps control blood sugar. One serving equals 1⁄2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw veggies.
- Limit SweetsSave simple sugars for a small treat once or twice a week if your blood sugar is managed. If not, cut back even more.
- Watch When You EatTiming your meals matters too. We’ll talk about meal scheduling in our next article.
